Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave is more forgiving than a traditional one-save route lock because chapters and paths can be replayed, but that does not mean every recruit is equally safe to ignore.
Some characters are unavailable on specific hero paths. Others require a Paralogue, a story checkpoint, dialogue answers or a late Renown threshold. Those are the recruits most likely to create a "why can't I recruit them?" moment.

Gaitz is the clearest route-exclusive warning
Gaitz is the strongest example in the current data because his Part I recruitment is tied to Dietrich's route.
The current requirement set is:
- Support 3
- Renown 10
- Bertrand's Paralogue completed
- the later They Have Lost story condition
If you are playing Cai, Theodora or Leda, extra gifts and Renown will not make the Part I Recruit option appear.

Sha Lan has a two-route window
Sha Lan is currently marked recruitable only from:
- Dietrich
- Leda
Her recruitment also depends on Anatolia's Paralogue and the recorded answer sequence. This makes her higher-risk than a normal recruit who simply asks for Support and Renown.

Route-unavailable does not always mean permanently lost
Seteth, Ursula and Buccar illustrate a different type of missable risk: they are available on several paths but not all four.
That means route planning matters, but you still have alternative opportunities:
- Seteth: not on Dietrich
- Ursula: not on Leda
- Buccar: not on Cai
Use the route tables before investing time in Support for a character the current hero cannot recruit.
Characters who join in later Parts
Post-launch recruitment guides also document characters who are not normal Part I recruits and instead join in Parts II or III through later story conditions.
This guide does not yet create standalone pages for all of those later-game characters because the site's structured database is still expanding. The important planning rule is: not seeing a recruit option in Part I does not automatically mean the character is unobtainable.
Can replay fix a missed recruit?
Often, yes.
Support is global across the save, and the game supports replaying completed chapters and hero paths. That means a missed relationship threshold or side task can often be revisited without starting an entirely new save.
However, replay does not change route availability. If a recruit is unavailable to the current hero, you still need a route where that character can actually join.
Before ending a Part I route
Use this checklist:
- Open the route recruitment page and scan for unavailable characters.
- Prioritize route-exclusive or two-route recruits first.
- Finish required Paralogues before their story gates matter.
- Build Support and Renown in parallel.
- Talk to new orange-dot characters when they appear in Dagsion.
- Re-check character requirements before advancing the final chapters of the route.
